Otún Quimbaya sanctuary overview
The sanctuary is located in the department of Risaralda in the Andean region of Colombia on the central cordillera. The sanctuary was founded in 1996 to guarantee the conservation of the subandina jungle and the species that live in these ecosystems.
It is home to a variety of birds, butterflies and mammals. Typical cloud forest plant species include wax palms, yarumos, orchids and bromeliads. A variety of climates – from dry to rainy season – makes this place a green place with a great variety of vegetation.
This area is protected due to the importance of its ecosystems. Plantations of cipres, roble, urapán and pino can be seen due to the reforestation programme of the basins.
It is an ideal place for ecotourism enthusiasts.
