Yopal is the capital of the department of Casanare. It covers an area of 2,595 km². The city was only founded in 1915, which makes it one of the youngest capitals in the world.
Yopal is a wonderfully contrasting city with precious flora and fauna on one side and the large water resources and wealth of hydrocarbons on the other. While in the 1950s Yopal had only 214 inhabitants, 86,860 people were counted in 2003.
Among the tourist activities, it is possible to visit an old airport, transformed today into a park and which was built by prisoners in the 50s. The old quarter of San Martin is also charming, as is the viewpoint of the Virgen de Manare, the religious sanctuary of the Virgin Patron of the inhabitants of the department of Casanare.
