The Referendum for Peace: A Historic Step in Colombian History
Colombia took a historic step in the year 2016, a perfect year for reconciliation and transition to a sustainable peace in different areas of the country, a radical change after a 50-year period of armed conflict.
In order to carry out this process of peace, several negotiations took place in Havana in Cuba, to reach an agreement with the FARC, a process completed by the signature of the agreement on the 26 of October 2016 in the city of Cartagena. However, to guarantee the success of the peace agreement, the president of the Republic Juan Manuel Santos convenes the Colombian people to participate in a referendum on the 2nd of October 2016.
What is the referendum?
The referendum is a mechanism for participation, created so that Colombian people can participate in political decisions that concern and affect them. To date in Colombia, two referendums have been organized: the first one in 1957 under the government of the ex-president Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, and the referendum for peace in 2016 under the government of Juan Manuel Santos.
2016: Referendum for Peace
On the 2nd of October, the day of the referendum for peace, all citizens with Colombian nationality had the opportunity to vote, in Colombia or abroad, to determine if they support the Peace Agreement or not. It is necessary to clarify that it was never about questioning the Right to Peace; the main objective of this vote is to approve the current agreements established during the meeting in La Havana in Cuba between the Colombian Government and the FARC.
Independently of the decision taken by Colombian people on the 2nd of October, our agency commits to continue the development of a sustainable peace and continues to change the image of the country and demonstrate its historic and cultural treasures.
