The Ensenada de UTRIA Natural Park is located in the Choco region, on the Colombian Pacific coast between Nuqui and Bahia Solano. It is a conservation area and a vast territory where many ecosystems can be found. These ecosystems are the link between the jungle, the mangroves, the beaches and the Pacific Ocean.
It is a very quiet place and that is why the whales come here to give birth to their young. They migrate to the area between June and September. They come from the South Pole and travel about 8000 km in each direction. The behaviour of the humpback whale is characterised by leaping out of the water and slapping the water with its fins and tail. It is one of the most beautiful spectacles in nature.
The Utria Park is a place for the reproduction and preservation of various species, of economic interest such as fish, which are essential for the food sustainability of the local communities that live from fishing. The fish come here to lay their eggs and give birth to their young. They stay here for a long time to feed and take refuge. When the fish grow up, they come out into the open sea. The mangroves are precisely adapted to the cycle of the rising and falling tide.
The black communities are located in the coastal zone and the Indian communities in the jungle. The area where the indigenous communities are located is characterised by the presence of tropical rainforest. This rainforest ecosystem is very rich in biodiversity of animals and plants.
In the Utria Park, and particularly in Chocó, there are threatened species. The strategy of the national parks through ecotourism, has set an economic and educational objective, in order to raise the awareness of local people and improve their quality of life. The aim will be to develop all processes in the region: working with indigenous communities, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations and community councils to highlight the importance of environmental conservation.

The park covers 54,300 hectares. On one side you can see mysterious mountains covered by tropical jungle, partly hidden by fog. On the other side, you can see the majestic ocean. Sea turtles and whales return every year to these warm waters, and the area is regularly visited by rare bird species.
The coast of Utria is rocky and narrow, consisting of coral reefs with very few sandy beaches. The jungle almost reaches the sea shore.
